Åpen Musikk (Open Music) is a music course for beginners and intermediates at any instrument developed by Jonas Evenstad. The pedagogical goal of Åpen Musikk is to accelerate the development of understanding, creativity and musical identity of the student in meeting with contemporary music, composition and intuitive improvisation, and ultimately let a new found perspective give new insights into other types of music. This gives ground for a didactic model in three parts. In the first part an ensemble of music students and a teacher will collectively establish a broader sense of their instruments vocabulary through removing of established musical practise and exploration of different sonic possibilities. The instrumental possibilities will be continued into the second part. Here the ensemble will interpret different modernistic pieces with increasingly fixed notation, moving through text-compositions, to graphic scores and ultimately to traditionally notated music. The third part of the course is divergent in that the newly discovored sounds and notation forms is put together for the making of new compositions. In this sense, the goal of the two previous parts were to lay a creative ground for the students to work upon. Throughout the course a practical and theoretical focus on listening is established and related to each exercise. By the end of the course, the ensemble will put together a concert based on all the material studied and used.

Pilot-project at Musikkveka in Ulsteinvik 7th-12th August 2023

During a concert band course hosted by NMF (Norwegian Music band Foundation) I was allowed an hour a day with a selection of course participants, where I could operate freely both methodologically and esthetically. This gave me a chance to develop and practice a pilot-project for 'Åpen Musikk'.
